Elon Musk announced that X will open-source its entire codebase once an internal security vulnerability review is complete. Third-party independent reviewers would verify that the published code matches what’s actually running in production.
If it happens, this would be genuinely unusual. Meta, TikTok, and YouTube all keep their core infrastructure proprietary. Developers getting access to a production-grade social media stack at X’s scale would be a big deal — and could put some pressure on competitors to be more transparent about how their platforms work.
The track record so far
X’s history with open-sourcing is mixed. The positive side: the recommendation algorithm was partially open-sourced in 2023, Grok 1 weights were released under Apache 2.0 in 2024, Grok 2.5 weights appeared on Hugging Face in August 2025, the ‘For You’ feed ranking algorithm went open source in January 2026, and Grok Build’s Rust source was published on GitHub in July 2026.
The less encouraging side: Grok 3 was promised open source by February 2026 and still hasn’t appeared.
So the pattern is real progress, but with delays and gaps.
What’s still unknown
No release date has been announced. The scope of the independent review isn’t defined. And there’s no word yet on how — or whether — community contributions would be handled once the code is public.
The “no exceptions” framing is notable, but the actual test will be whether the full codebase shows up, and when.
